Hawthorne Valley Farm 2024 learner holding on of the farm's chickensCharlotte comes to our Veg team to build on her experiences working on small vegetable farms in high school and college. She grew up in Tacoma Park, Maryland, and came to the Northeast to pursue a degree in physics at Mount Holyoke College. While teaching high school physics for a year outside of Boston, Charlotte realized that, at this stage in her life, she wanted to do something that involved more time being outside. So she spent some time last summer working on organic farms in New England through the World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms program, and began looking into apprenticeships to learn more about the “why” in farming practices.

Going from the sciences to farming may seem like two different worlds, but Charlotte has found many connections between the two—everything from the botany of the vegetable starts to the electrical current needed for cow fencing. She is excited for the ability to be outside working with her hands each day, and has loved the community environment of working alongside and learning from the farm team as they do their day-to-day tasks and also take the time to come together to work on the biodynamic preparations. One of the things about being at HVF that she appreciates the most is the ability to live right in the middle of it all and interact with the animals every day as she walks around our beautiful campus.
