Summer Camp season is quickly approaching and ther Summer Camp season is quickly approaching and there’s no better place to be than Hawthorne Valley! We have a few spots remaining in several of our camps:

- 6 Day Farm Explorers Camp (Ages 8-11)
- 13 Day Farm Explorers Camp (Ages 9-12)
- 6 Day Earth Stewards Camp (Ages 12-14)
- 13 Day Earth Stewards Camp (Ages 13-16)

At Hawthorne Valley, we create an environment where campers gain skills, independence, and friendships while participating as active members of our farm community. Our overnight Farm Explorers Camp offers children ages 8-12 a traditional summer camp experience on a working organic farm while Earth Stewards, aged 12 to 16, experience Hawthorne Valley as “junior apprentices.” Farm Explorers live in our large farmhouse and spend their days in small groups rotating through various activities such as caring for the farm animals, crafting, gardening, and more. Earth Stewards spend their mornings in workstations across the campus, working alongside farmers, cheesemakers, chefs, and bakers, participating in the daily rhythms of our lively farm.

We recommend enrolling soon to secure a spot for your favorite camper! More information can be found at the link in our bio.
🐄 Morning pasture moments ✨ The sleepy herd 🐄 Morning pasture moments ✨

The sleepy herd made their way to the barn this morning from the pasture right next to the playground. With the hot, dry weather of the past few days, farmers have been pre-clipping this grass to prevent the seed heads from forming and becoming too fibrous. The pre-clipping lets the cows eat freshly cut grass as well as some more tender bits closer to the ground that would have otherwise been blocked out by the growth.

Throughout our region, we currently see these stri Throughout our region, we currently see these striking roadside displays of pink (sometimes white, sometimes purple) flowers. While often referred to as
"Phlox," and mistaken as native wildflowers, they are actually called Dame's Rocket (Hesperis matronalis) and have been introduced from Europe. They bloom about a month earlier than Garden Phlox (which is also introduced, but does not spread as enthusiastically along roadsides and into floodplain forests), have four petals (instead of five in Phlox), and alternate leaves (instead of opposite in Phlox). Dame's Rocket is considered an invasive plant in several neighboring states.

Friday the 19th, on a beautiful sunny evening, the Friday the 19th, on a beautiful sunny evening, the community gathered for our Spring Concert in the Pavillion. After a lively opening song from Fourth Grade led by Ms Loshak, Third through Fifth Grades played their string ensemble pieces, Middle School Chorus and High School recorders shared their music led by Dr Frishkoff, Middle and High School Orchestras played under the direction of Ms Eldredge. Sounds of violins, violas and cellos floated out over fields and stream, accompanied by bird song. From "I love the Mountains” through Simple Gifts, William Tell Overture and Bizet’s Farandole to "The Parting Glass", this concert was a celebration of the role that music plays in our lives. Even if playing in an orchestra is not in your future plans, mastering an instrument teaches us many things: to be humble, to solve problems, to listen to ourselves and each other, to persist, to create something beautiful that is bigger than the sum of its parts.
