Two new greenhouses are going up in the farm yard! Two new greenhouses are going up in the farm yard! The crew has been chipping away at the build-out of these each day. When the farm team isn’t in the propagation house seeding or potting up tomatoes and peppers, they’re out raising hoops and running impact drivers all day - trying hard to get these ready for production as soon as possible.

The two germination chambers built over the wintertime have proven to be a worthy investment as our starts are looking strong. Many flower seeds are germinating in there this week, along with a lot of ginger seed! We're looking forward to dedicating a small tunnel to ginger as a new trial crop this year.

The first stages of spring field preparation (mowing and tilling in cover crops) have been underway these last two weeks. The first successions of arugula, baby kale, radishes, and hakurei turnips have already been direct seeded in the field and will be ready for those first CSA boxes in June. With the propagation house tables completely full and starts already hardening off to be planted in the fields, we can say the season is fully underway.
Betsy (the human who runs @cowednesday) had the op Betsy (the human who runs @cowednesday) had the opportunity these past 2 weeks to visit our dear friends at Camphill Triform @triformcamphill and help with their morning milking and chores. Some of our most beloved cows were brought over from Triform, so getting to spend time with some “cousins” and seeing similarities in genetics and personalities is a treat! 🐮

In recent weeks we have noticed an influx of folks In recent weeks we have noticed an influx of folks visiting the valley and the farm. As the warmer weather invites more people to spend time outside, we want to restate that for now, we will continue to keep our campus closed to the general public. As we have for the last year, we are choosing to prioritize the needs of the students and coworkers over our desire to welcome the general public to experience Hawthorne Valley. If visiting us, we welcome you to shop in the Farm Store and enjoy a meal under the pavilion-but ask that you refrain from visiting the animals or walking around campus.

We will continue to update you on the status of campus closures and look forward to welcoming you back soon in a greater capacity!
Repost from @cowednesday: A few ladies from our “N” line enjoying their breakfast this #cowednesday ✨🐮✨
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nadine (photo 1) is a weaned calf, a little over 1 year old. She spends her days with other weaned calves in our loafing shed- these animals are too young to spend all their time outside but too old to be with their moms. So they hang out with each other! There are about 20 weaned calves in this large pen at a given time.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Photo 2 is Nico, Nadine’s mom. Nico is a solid milker with a bit of a naughty streak. Her coat is fairy distinct in our herd- almost like a strawberry blonde!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And photo 3 is our beloved Noelle, Nico’s mom and Nadine’s grandma, coming up on 13 years of age this summer. Noelle is the oldest cow currently in the milking rotation, and extremely respected in the herd: a leader and role model. When the cows go out to pasture in a few weeks, Noelle will very likely be in the lead. During pasture season, mistakes are sometimes made which lead cows into the wrong pasture. Farmers know, that if you can get Noelle into the right pasture on her own, the whole herd will follow!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nico and Nadine have their own distinct personalities and strengths. We love seeing how these lineages will have common traits outside of looks and milk volume. Maybe Nadine will be the next herd leader 🥰🐂🐄🐂 #cowednesday
