The third-grade class recently spent a whole week The third-grade class recently spent a whole week on the farm. The third-grade Farm Trip is an historic turning point or a “threshold moment” where children step away from their home and integrate into the daily happenings on the farm. The children aided in all areas of farm life from mucking the barn, rising very early to milk the cows, tasting the sprouts just picked from the greenhouse - all the way down to puddle jumping!
Join Farmscape Ecology Program (FEP) on a Early Sp Join Farmscape Ecology Program (FEP) on a Early Spring Amphibian and Natural History Walk on Saturday, March 25th. The walk will include a visit to amphibian breeding grounds, such as vernal pools, to look for frog and salamander egg masses, and discussion of the ecology and importance of these sites. Along the way, there will be opportunities to identify woody plants by their twigs, buds, and bark, and we'll keep a lookout for the springtime happenings of plants and other taxa. The walk is free, but participant numbers are limited, so please email Kyle at kbradford@hawthornevalley.org if you would like to join. Details and directions to the meeting location will be sent to interested participants.

👅🐄 Leap is wishing everyone a happy #cowedne 👅🐄 Leap is wishing everyone a happy #cowednesday!

We were blanketed with quite the layer of snow yesterday! Many of our animals hunkered down and kept warm off of each others’ body heat and of course, by munching on some hay and grain.

Leap here is nearing weaning age, which is when she and her mama Layla will break their bond of nursing so that Leap can start to get used to the “grown-up” diet of grasses and grains. Luckily, she already loved both those things!
Pairs of coyotes have been photographed on a nearb Pairs of coyotes have been photographed on a nearby farm's trail camera, passing through on this route every few days or so. It's not clear whether they are the same pair or if they are a mated pair due to the subtle differences between male and female coyotes. Nearby the camera, a mess of coyote tracks was found, possibly from two coyotes mating or perhaps from a territorial confrontation.

The first few months of the year are the typical breeding season for coyotes. They are "obligate monogamists," meaning they require a dedicated partner for reproduction. As a bonded pair, they remain together their whole lives, raising their young together and defending the same territory year after year alongside their family group.

Hudson Valley residents are very familiar with the Hudson Valley residents are very familiar with the creature pictured above. You may need to look closer to discern the shape of a white-tailed deer who has boldly broken into one of our greenhouses. Last season’s drought impacted all living things and systems. When deer need to look harder for food, they learn very fast how to get around obstacles that would normally deter them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Last season, our crops suffered a loss of tens of thousands of dollars because of deer pressure on our main and corner vegetable fields. Our current fencing is old and does nothing to stop deer from tearing sections down with their antlers and feasting upon their favorite lettuces. The need for a new fence is urgent and the time for us to act is now, before the spring planting season begins. A new professional-grade fence will cost $50,000. We envision using Locust wood posts that will have a lifespan of at least 25 years. Given last year’s crop loss, the fence will pay for itself in just one growing season.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Please consider supporting our campaign to raise $50,000 to build this fence and save our crops from the pressures of wildlife looking for an easy meal. A deer-proof fence will be a morale boost for our farmers, removing the current need for constant vigilance and freeing our farmers up for other important work.

Our farm team works nonstop to nourish our 400 CSA members and thousands of others who shop at the Farm Store and attend the NYC green markets where we sell our Biodynamic veggies. Hawthorne Valley Farm is part of a vibrant local economy and food system, and we want our produce to continue to strengthen our community economically and nutritionally. We already have a donor who will provide a matching grant, so if we can raise $25,000 we can proceed with this crucial project!

To donate and help make this project a reality, follow the link in our bio.
