In a few months, this shrub will be ablaze with small, fragrant, yellow flowers. Twigs and leaves are aromatic and smell lemony. The foliage feeds caterpillars of the Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly. #farmscapeecology

The Circus is coming to town and it will be “Out The Circus is coming to town and it will be “Out of this World!” as advertised on these amazing student-designed posters. The 7th grade circus block at Hawthorne Valley School is very different from any of the other main lesson blocks. The students work together as a class to form skill-based acts tied together with a storyline of their creation. As they craft a show from the ground up, the 7th graders challenge themselves, physically, emotionally and socially.

Please come support the 7th Grade circus! It will be held in the Assembly Hall on February 14 at 6 pm; February 15 at 6 pm; and February 16 at 7 pm

Tickets are $5 for kids, $10 for adults, and $25 for a family. Children 2 and under are free. You can purchase your tickets in advance at the Main Office or at the door.

Have you ever wondered about the purpose behind co Have you ever wondered about the purpose behind cows engaging in what appears to be a rather curious habit of licking their nostrils (as herd member Luz is so beautifully demonstrating here)? It turns out, this seemingly odd behavior is steeped in natural wisdom! The bovine nose is a marvel of biological engineering, secreting mucus that serves as a protective barrier, guarding the lungs against a myriad of harmful bacteria lurking in the environment. Since cows haven’t quite mastered the art of using a handkerchief, they’ve devised their own ingenious method to keep their nasal passages clean. With a graceful curl of their long, rough tongues, they performing a meticulous and healthy lick. This is not just a casual lick; it’s a vital ritual in the cow’s daily hygiene routine, ensuring their respiratory health remains in tip-top shape. So, the next time you catch a cow in the act, know that you’re witnessing a fascinating facet of nature’s ingenuity at work! @cowednesday

In our woods at Hawthorne Valley, living trees, dead wood, and rocks are brightly covered in these organisms right now, with all of the precipitation we’ve had these past few weeks. They fulfill different and vital niches in the environment and often live together in diverse communities.
